Our services are: All patients who have undergone a major operation are visited by one of the nurse specialists to ensure that the patients have adequate pain relief, achieved through a variety of techniques such as 'epidural', 'PCA' and 'nerve blocks' apart from the well known methods of tablets and intramuscular injections. The critical care services encompass the Intensive Care Unit and the High Dependency Unit. A team of consultant anaesthetists and highly skilled trainee anaesthetists are responsible for the day-to-day care, treatment and support of critically ill patients requiring advanced cardiovascular, respiratory and renal support. They are also involved in the resuscitation and transfer of critically ill patients within and between hospitals. The service accepts patients referred by other specialist departments who cannot be managed on ordinary wards.
