Journals

The Library and Information Service is based at Hillingdon Hospital for staff in our Trust, NHS Hillingdon, Central and North West London Foundation Trust, local GPs, practice staff and placement students. Other non-profit health and social care staff in the Hillingdon area are also eligible to apply for library membership.

Entry codes are available to registered members of the Library for out-of-hours access by enrolment through the library, but must not be passed on to any third party. The library at Mount Vernon Hospital is part of the North and East Hertfordshire Trust but access is given to all staff at Mount Vernon.

Approximately 3500 books are held by the Library and items from other libraries in London may be available through our inter-library loans service. We also hold an extensive range of journals.

Internet and Intranet Access

All staff employed by The Hillingdon Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust can apply directly to the I.T. Dept (or via their line manager) for a password for the Internet. Registered Library members not employed directly by The Hillingdon Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (such as students) can request an application form from the Librarian for a temporary password. These applications normally take about 5 days to process and library staff are unable to provide alternative interim access. Further advice is available from the I.T. help desk on ext.4400. Please note that only approved USB devices obtained from the I.T. Dept can be used on our pc’s, all other devices will be blocked.

Current Awareness

Photocopies of contents pages can be provided on a regular basis by arrangement with the librarian. A Current Awareness Bulletin is available to nursing and allied health staff. Please contact a member of library staff to register for this service.

Zetoc is an electronic table of contents service providing access to the British Library Electronic Table of Contents database of over 20,000 current journal titles. To access Zetoc – either log into My Athens (http://www.athensams.net/myathens) and choose Zetoc from the list of resources or go to http://zetoc.mimas.ac.uk, select NHS from the list of organisations and login with your Athens Account.

Other current awareness services are available at http://www.library.nhs.uk/rss/. Library staff can assist you in setting up a current awareness profile from NHS Evidence.

Inter-Library Loans

Books and journals not held in the library can usually be obtained through inter-library loans. Readers should normally expect requested material to take up to 7 days to arrive. In urgent cases it may be possible to obtain articles by fax. Locations for journals held in other libraries can also be given. All requests are charged at £1.00 per item (payable in advance). Staff must be enrolled with the library to use the inter-library loan service, request forms will be returned to the user if we do not have their details. Students on placement at the Trust are asked to direct any inter-library loan requests to their education provider’s library service.
