Paediatrics (Children's Services)

The general paediatric service is housed under a single roof and consists of an inpatient unit, day care and outpatient units.

General Paediatrics

Peter Pan Ward has 12 cubicles and a family room plus an 8 bedded open-ward section. Between 2000-3000 children are admitted per year with acute medical, surgical and orthopaedic problems. Wendy Ward is the day care unit. Each year over 5000 children are seen for a variety of conditions including day surgery, scans, blood tests and for clinical reviews. The childrens outpatient unit hosts a variety of clinics. These cover both general paediatric and specialist services. The clinics are consultant and specialist nurse led and include: diabetes, neurology, allergy, respiratory, endocrine and baby. Children with other problems such as eye, ENT and dental are seen in other departments of the hospital. Paediatric Accident & Emergency

The Accident and Emergency department has a dedicated paediatric unit with over 20,000-childhood attendances each year. The unit has a paediatric waiting area and 7 bays for seeing children with a short stay observation unit. Dr Wendy Kuriyan is the lead Consultant with an interest in paediatrics for A&E. The department has close ties with a number of tertiary level services for children including St Mary’s Hospital, Great Ormond Street Hospital, The Royal Brompton and Harefield Hospital to which critically ill children may be transferred.

NICU Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU)

The Maternity unit is housed in separate premises from the general paediatric unit on the hospital site. Between 3500 and 4500 babies are delivered each year. Infants who are born premature or who require intensive care are accommodated in NICU. Between 300 and 400 infants are admitted per year. The NICU is part of the North West London Neonatal Network Dr Michele Cruwys, Dr Jide Menakaya and Dr Abbas Khakoo are the paediatricians with an interest in neonatology. See more on the NICU.

Paediatric Oncology Shared Care Unit (POSCU)

Children suspected of having cancer need a variety of health professionals to diagnose and treat their conditions. They come from the: Principal Treatment Centre (PTC), Paediatric Oncology Shared Care Unit (POSCU) and the Children’s Community Nursing team (CCN). See more on the POSCU.

Child Development Centre (CDC) Child Development Centre

Children with additional long term needs such as those with cerebral palsy, autistic spectrum disorders, ADHD are assessed and followed up by a multidisciplinary team consisting of consultant community paediatricians, associate specialists and therapists including speech and language, physiotherapy and occupational. The consultant community paediatricians are Dr Chelvi Kukendera and Dr Atul Tiwari.

The CDC, which is under separate management (Hillingdon Primary Care Trust) is co-located on the same site as the acute paediatric unit, there is also a well-established paediatric audiology unit.
