Obstetrics and Gynaecology
The departmental team includes doctors, consultants,
midwives, nurses, healthcare assistants, clerical and administration staff.
The Obstetrician
An obstetrician is a doctor who has specialist knowledge of pregnancy and labour complications. Obstetricians are consulted when complications arise before, during or immediately after birth.
Consultant Obstetrician
A Consultant Obstetrician leads a team of doctors who are gaining experience and training to be independent obstetricians. At Hillingdon some of our Consultant Obstetricians specialise in fetal medicine, diabetes, HIV, cervical sutures and drug misuse in pregnancy. All our Consultant Obstetricians are linked with midwifery teams.
Consultants
All our Consultants practice both Obstetrics and Gynaecology, covering the range of specialties between them:
- There are currently Elective caesarean section lists on 4 days each week and 24/7 anaesthetic cover is provided.
- There is an excellent antenatal ultrasound service within the maternity unit, led by sonographers. There is a twice-weekly high-risk Ultrasound list. Amniocenteses are also performed. The Department has two sessions per week accredited for training for Advanced Obstetric Ultrasound.

Training Posts
All the Specialist Training posts are recognised college posts and rotate within the NW Thames training programme. We have recently introduced a Medical Student Training Program, and are allocated six students every six weeks from Imperial College Medical School. We are very proud to have consistently been nominated as ‘Best Attachment’ by the Medical Students.
