Our volunteers play an important role, helping our staff make the hospital experience better for patients. Voluntary support is committed to recruiting individuals from a spectrum of the community. They match individual skills/experience to appropriate placements, with training and support to develop skills.

Administration support volunteer for the dietetic & speech therapy service

The Dietetic & Speech Therapy team are a small friendly department who are looking for a volunteer to undertake some administration duties. The volunteer would play an important role in administering dietetic clinics by preparing dietetic record cards for clinic and filing them after clinics.  This important role enables dietetic clinics to run smoothly.

We are looking for someone who enjoys a busy office environment and who is able to commit to 5 hours a week for a minimum of 6 months to a year.  The service is open Monday – Friday 8.30am - 4.30pm so your hours would need to fit in with this, however can be on any day of the working week or split over 2 days. 

We are looking for someone to start as soon as possible following mandatory training.  Good literacy and organisational skills are essential for this role.

Bereavement service office volunteer

We would greatly appreciate your assistance in our Bereavement Office. The bereavement officers play a vital role in working with bereaved family members and we need your help to support the back office administration tasks that require a good eye for detail. We seek a volunteer who can provide support to our service by answering the phone, taking messages, receiving and logging medical notes, typing up messages for GP’s, photocopying and scanning documents. Full training in the required activities will be given and as such this may suit someone new to the office environment or equally a more experienced person.

We are looking for a compassionate, friendly and reliable person to commit to us for a minimum of six months assisting us on Mondays between 9am and 12 midday. Following Bank Holidays, working the Tuesday would be expected.

RVS volunteers

RVS run a shop in the main entrance at Hillingdon Hospital and seek volunteers to help in the shop or on the ward trolley round.

Ward-based patient companions

We would like more Ward Based Patient Companion Volunteers. They play an important role in working with nurses to create a calm, caring and comfortable ward environment. They offer companionship and comfort to patients and provide support and assistance during mealtimes. We are looking for compassionate, friendly and reliable people to commit to a minimum of six months, starting in October following mandatory training session in either late September/October. Excellent communication skills are essential for this role.

Meet and greet volunteer: Maternity and Hillingdon Hospital

We want to recruit Meet and Greet volunteers to direct and escort patients / visitors to wards or departments, and help them overcome any apprehension and nervousness. Volunteers must be cheerful and approachable with good communication skills, ideally with a general knowledge of the hospital and its layout. We ask for a 6 month commitment. You will be expected to attend a mandatory training session..

Meeters and greeters at Outpatients & Reception, Hillingdon Hospital

We are looking for volunteers to act as "meeters and greeters" based at the Outpatients entrance to the hospital and also at the Main Entrance of the hospital. Volunteers must be cheerful and approachable with good communications skills and ideally with a knowledge of the hospital and its layout.  Volunteers will be required from Monday to Friday between the hours of 9 am - 4 pm and each volunteer should ideally be able to offer a regular four hour shift.

League of Friends

A voluntary group at Hillingdon Hospital that runs:

  • Baby Boutique in Maternity (Main Entrance), 10am-12pm & 2pm-4pm Mon to Fri, and 12pm-2pm on Sat and Sun.
  • A refreshment facility in the Main Outpatient department Mon to Fri, 10am-3.30pm.

Comforts Fund

If interested in volunteering for the Comforts Fund, please visit one of their shops at Mount Vernon Hospital. This voluntary group at Mount Vernon Hospital was established in 1935. Money raised contributes to equipment and materials for patients.

160 volunteers run the:

  • Newsagent (10am - 3:30pm, Mon - Fri)
  • Bookshop (11am – 3pm, Mon – Fri) - requires quality donations
  • Charity shop (11am – 3pm, Mon – Fri)
  • Two coffee bars, ground floor of the Princess Christian Wing (9:45 am – 4pm) and main Outpatients and Cancer Outpatient Departments (10am – 4pm).
  • Refreshment service in Radiotherapy (10am – 4pm)
  • Snacks and newspaper trolley on wards (weekday mornings).
