Outpatients: When you arrive

Give your name and appointment letter/card to the receptionist who will confirm your details and book you in. It is very important that we have a day time and evening telephone number for you, in case we need to arrange to see you at short notice.

Waiting time

Help us by arriving for your appointment on time, and we will do our best to ensure that you are seen within 30 minutes of your appointment. Occasionally your appointment may be delayed because your doctor has been called to deal with an urgent case or has had to spend longer than expected with another patient. Please be patient if this happens. You should allocate extra time for the possibility of undergoing tests, before or after your clinic appointment.

Your consultation

Everyone who attends an outpatient clinic is under the care of a particular consultant and their team. You may not see the consultant at every visit but the doctor you see will discuss any major decisions about your treatment with the consultant. If there is anything you do not understand about your condition or treatment, don't hesitate to ask any member of the clinical or nursing staff.

Informed consent

If you are going to undergo any procedure, the doctor or nurse will explain the benefits and risks to you and any alternative treatments before you consent to treatment.

Further investigations

After seeing the doctor, you may need further investigations such as x-ray or blood tests. We will always try to fit these in on the same day but this may mean waiting some time. If this is inconvenient tell the reception staff who will make you another appointment. One-stop clinics, such as the Breast clinic, carry out their own investigations so you may be there for some time.

Pharmacy

Your hospital prescriptions can be dispensed at the Hospital Pharmacy. It is open from 9am-5pm Monday to Friday, normal NHS prescription charges apply.

As you leave

If you are asked to come back for another appointment, you will be given a slip by the doctor or nursing staff. Please take this to the clinic.
