Library and Knowledge Services

The Library and Knowledge Service is based at Hillingdon Hospital for staff in our Trust, Hillingdon primary care staff, local Central and NW London Foundation Trust staff, local GPs, practice staff and placement students. Other non-profit health and social care staff in the Hillingdon area are also eligible to apply for library membership.

We have approximately 3300 books, some print journals and access to items from other NHS libraries through our inter-library loans service.
An entry code to the library is available to registered members for out-of-hours access - enrol in person through the library for this service.

The library at Mount Vernon Hospital is part of the North and East Hertfordshire Trust but access is given to all staff at Mount Vernon Hospital.

Books and journals

  • Online library catalogue – Use our online public access catalogue to search for books available from this library. Anyone can browse the catalogue as a ‘Guest’, registered library members will receive account details enabling them to renew online, reserve books and view a record of previously borrowed items. Those eligible to join the library can complete and return an enrolment form (PDF, 515KB) to or ask us for further details.

  • To browse an A-Z list of all the print and e-journals available from this library, go to: NICE Evidence - Journals A-Z and login with a NHS OpenAthens Account to connect to any of the e-journals listed.

  • See NHS Evidence / HILO (Health Information for London Online) for journals and major biomedical databases for staff or students.

Student information

All students are eligible to enrol with the library for the duration of their placement with the Trust. Eduroam is available for all HE students and staff.

Internet and intranet access

All of our staff can apply directly to the IT Department (or via their line manager) for a password for the Internet. Registered library members not employed directly by The Hillingdon Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (such as students) can request an application form from the librarian for a temporary password.

These applications normally take about 1 or 2 days to process and library staff are unable to provide alternative interim access. Further advice is available from the IT helpdesk on ext.4400.

Please note that only approved USB devices obtained from the IT department can be used on our PCs - all other devices will be blocked. Wi-Fi is usually available in the Library – Select NHS Wi-Fi, read and accept the Terms and Conditions presented and follow the instructions to complete the registration process. Eduroam is also available for placement students.

Current awareness and alerting services

From February 2020, the Library is subscribing to KnowledgeShare - to provide staff* with a current awareness service. To sign up for this service, you will need a NHS OpenAthens account – see for registration. Once you have an OpenAthens account, you can request current awareness updates on chosen topics by completing and returning this KnowledgeShare form (PDF, 315KB). Send completed forms to or ask us for further details. *THH staff and placement students only, others should make enquiries to their OpenAthens administrator to see which resources are available to them. See Find your NHS OpenAthens adminstrator.

NHS Evidence Journals and Databases Alerts
Library staff can help you set up a search alert to receive regular (weekly, fortnightly or monthly) email updates indicating the number of new records matching a saved search, along with a direct link to the NHS Evidence results page. Please ask a member of the library staff if you would like assistance with setting up alerts or if you would like further details of this service.

The latest contents pages from a wide range of journals can be provided on a regular basis by arrangement with the librarian.

Inter-library loans

Books and journals not held in the library can usually be obtained through inter-library loans. Most articles are supplied within 24 hours although some requests (including book loans) may to take up to seven days to arrive. Locations for journals held in other libraries can also be given.

Staff must be enrolled with the library to use the inter-library loan service; request forms will be returned to the user if we do not have their details. Students on placement at the Trust are asked to direct any inter-library loan requests to their education provider’s library service.

Literature Searches

Library staff will also perform literature searches on behalf of library users. Please use this form to provide details of your search request: Literature Search (19KB, pdf). Please note that students are expected to conduct their own searches but can request assistance from the library staff.
